It is also known as blepharoplasty. Also referred to as blepharoplasty, Eyelid Surgery – Bringing the Twinkle in your Eye Back Articles surgical correction of defects around the eyelids can make your eyes seem wider and more alert, adding a vibrancy that subtly enhances your personality.
Eyelid Surgery – Why it is a Good Option
In blepharoplasty, excess fat and loose tissue are surgically removed around the eyes. Age can aggravate sagging and loose skin around the eyes. It often causes them to fold downwards, creating droopy eyelids. The condition of ptosis and blepharoptosis is when the folded upper lids hide the tarsal edge of the open eye. It can also block vision. The sagging of the upper eyelids can often be caused by congenital defects, whereby the muscles surrounding the eye are underdeveloped. But, more frequently, the condition is due to age, trauma or nerve palsy.
Incorrect head position can cause neck pressure due to drooping lids. Ptosis can cause eyelashes to curl inward, causing discomfort to the eyes. It may also damage the cornea surface. It is sometimes the only option to improve the functionality of the eyelids while maintaining a clear vision line. Cosmetically, blepharoplasty may be performed to tighten sagging eyelids.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery can be performed in an outpatient setting, with little need for hospital care. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, which is applied to the upper and lower eyelids. This eliminates any feeling in that area. If you’re anxious, your surgeon may prescribe additional medications to reduce anxiety.
A short incision around the eyelid crease can be made after the surgery area is numb. The first step in removing the excess skin is to determine the layer of muscle that causes the eyelids rise. The levator superioris muscle (also known as ‘levator palpebrae’) is cut to reduce the eyelids’ droop. In some cases, incisions are required to remove excess tissue and bags. On the incision site, dissolvable stitches are used to ensure that they will be easily absorbed. When the sutures have been placed, the muscles will naturally be tightened in absence of loose skin.
As eyelid surgery can be considered minor, it is usually discharged without complications. Topical antibiotics are applied to the area and an eye protection bandage is used. Any soreness around your eyes or bruises can be treated with pain medicine.
The blepharoplasty procedure performed by an experienced plastic surgeon will effectively reduce droopy eyes while improving peripheral vision. The eyelid procedure can give the eyes the feeling of being alert, vibrant, and aesthetically enhance facial features.
